The Toothless Tiger
When the Malaysian Soccer Team took on the Indonesians juz the other day, they trooped out of the locker room with their heads held high. They had stemmed the mighty red tide at the Istora Senayan itself, winning 2-1. They were in high spirits! I watched from the stands as the Malaysian Tigers threathened to overwhelm their neighbours across the Straits of Malacca.
Alas, after 90 minutes, I was left to eat humble pie, as my Malaysian Tigers proved to have a louder growl then a potent bite. It was a toothless tiger! I could feel the utter despair one feels when ur country's own soccer team is humbled 1-4 on their own turf. The humiliation that I and the rest of the fully packed Bkt Jalil Stadium felt was beyond reasoning of words. We were let down with a thud.
However, the result was not the most dissapointing factor of the night. What really vexed me was the manner in which they were defeated. They lacked conviction in their game. They were lacklustre and simply crumbled in the 2nd half. They could not have resembled the fierce Malaysian Tiger which would have viciously clawed its way to survival, rather, they resembled another Malaysian homegrown, the Malaysian Pisang (Banana). They were soft in the inside and easily intimidated by the marauding Indonesians. What a disaster, the yellow jersey that they wore, in the end, only served to symbolise national shame!
Furthermore, the antics of a huge portion of the Malaysian crowd (this doesn't mean that the Indons were free from blame either) was utterly embarassing. What's the use of a 1st class structure like the Bukit Jalil Stadium if we only display a 3rd class level of sportsmanship? Bottles and fire crackers were hurled onto the turf by large sections of the crowd when our team was losing. Their cheers quickly turned to jeers. Shame on you! A true fan should never turn on his own team. WE should fight when they chips are down and not desert the team when they appear in most need of our support. The ensuing fracas in the stadium between both sides of supporters seem to only further prove that Malaysian supporters and their counterparts lack the capacity to behave properly in a sports arena.Although I do not wish this upon my own country, but, I have to wish that FIFA would take a stern action against the FAM for failing to control their own crowd. Perhaps, Malaysia has to play in closed doors until their supporters learn some true manners!
