The Candle in the Wind

It was relatively a good week for me. I and my junior counsel managed to emerge victorious from the preliminary rounds of the mooting competition and have made it to the semi-finals due on 7/4. We were faced with many obstacles before the competition even started and are grateful that we have made it this far. In the semis, we are drawn to meet the favourites, a team compromising established national level debaters! It seems that we always have it tough. But, that also means that victory always tastes sweeter. I’m quietly hopeful that with the right attitude and perhaps a dose of good fortune, we can prevail again, against all odds. There are never any easy draws in the semis anyway.
However, the passing of a great man have left me a little bit down despite all this euphoria. The death of ‘God’s favourite son’, Pope John Paul II, has shocked the entire Catholic community around the world. It’s indeed a very sad period for all those who have known and worshipped his kindness and humanity. I may not be a Catholic, but it’s always easy to fall in love and to respect a man who had tried his best to make the world a better place for other mere mortals like myself. The world is blessed to have been graced by such an honourable man who sacrificed himself in the name of love and God. If only every other person can be inspired by the deeds of a person like the Pope himself, then, perhaps one day we can make our world a better place not only for ourselves, but also for all those who live around us!
The candle may have burned out on the Pope, but, hopefully his spirit will aid the cardinals in the Sistine Chapel to choose another man worthy of such a high post in the Vatican. More importantly though, let’s hope that the spirit of the Pope lives in each of our hearts, and that through his example we may take heed. (Innerflame takes a bow)
