Updates
What have I been doing since the last blog? Well, the bouts of insomnia are back for starters. Everyday I go to bed very late, around 3-4 a.m., and wake up well into the next afternoon. Life has been a little bit tougher than I expected. I still go to bed wondering if things could have been different. Maybe if I had done more of certain things or less of others, the turn of events could have different. But, somehow, deep inside I guess I know the outcome was inevitable from the start. The only difference is I’m beginning to stop believing in fairy tales and good endings.
But until now (4a.m. 4/7/2005), I have managed to keep myself reasonably occupied. I managed to attend a karaoke session with a few friends (Jamie, Tim and others) at Red Box Pyramid. On the same day, I had also managed to have lunch with my school coordinator Mr. Foong at a trendy clubhouse. The lunch was delicious and it was a very different and an entirely fresh experience to go out for lunch with your lecturer in a personal capacity. Meanwhile that night, I got my first taste of a booze party at a friend’s house in Damansara Heights. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get my hands on much booze, not that I drink that much anyway, because my friend was noticeably drunk and I had to keep myself sober so I could drive us home safely. We ended up chatting right up to the next day before the party came to a close. I reached my house around 5 a.m., had a shower, and fell straight into a dark dream.
I woke up from my sleep feeling like a zombie, at least that was the start of this continuous feeling, one I’m sure to endure when I eventually fall asleep after this post and wake up the ‘next day’ (since technically I’m waking up on the same day!). Since then, I had also got my ‘first’ real taste of a night club when my friend invited me and was willing to fetch me to the Loft. My only prior experience at clubbing was the fateful night after my tort paper at Café Flam which presumably could not have counted as an experience at all since I remember so little of it (the booze got to me very early). The Loft was a very intriguing place. The place was filled with smoke from cigarettes and women dancing to their hearts delight (strangely the men seemed very subdued). I was introduced to a group of very beautiful young women from a local accounting firm. Soon, I found myself, much to my friend’s surprise on the dancing floor itself with a few of these hot gals in tow. If any of you are wondering if this ‘sudden’ display of courage was aided by the consumption of alcohol, you are gravely wrong. I had only a glass of Sprite/ 7- up that night. (Laughs)
Some perhaps already doubt the truth of this blog since what activities I have described so far is so contradictory to my nature. Well, the only defence I may plead is I’m trying to add a little variety to my life. I don’t think a little tinkering with the usual routine would be too bad as long as I do not get obsessed with whatever it is.
Besides that, I have filled my time with watching movies and VCDs. I borrowed a few old Stephen Chow VCDs (King of Beggars, All Well Ends Well ’92, Mad Monk, etc) from a friend. Mr. Chow is a real loon. His movies, especially the old ones, usually get me laughing so much that my tummy hurts. He is probably Hong Kong’s equivalent of Jim Carrey. I also watched Initial D on the big screen. The driving maneuvers were awesome. This show is a definite must watch for fans of car racing or any hot blooded young male who wants to get their adrenaline pumping. I also watched A Lot like Love (Ashton Kutcher & Amanda Peet), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie) and Million Dollar Baby (Hilary Swank, Clint Eastwood & Morgan Freeman. Of these 3 movies, Million Dollar Baby is a real gem. Clint Eastwood has not lost any of his charm and the story is a really heartfelt drama which promises to bring you to tears. On the other hand, Mr. & Mrs. Smith had a poor storyline, but, just watching Ms. Jolie (voted no. 1 in the FHM 100 Most Sexiest Women Poll & possibly soon to be Mrs. Pitt) in action should be enough for any straight male to spend a few quid on a movie ticket or a VCD. A Lot like Love is sadly a letdown. A movie hyped as a comedy flick did nothing to bring me even close to a giggle!
In a different perspective, I bought and finished reading John Grisham’s Skipping Christmas. I think I have a dangerous obsession with books and novels in particular. Every time I step into a book shop, I leave with a book in hand; although I have others back on my desk left still untouched. I call these unread books my virgin collection. At the rate I’m buying books, my virgin collection will be bolstered again soon. (Note: Skipping Christmas is a welcome departure from Grisham’s usual legal stories. But, I have to admit, he is much more convincing when he is writing stories revolving around the legal realm)
I have also applied for jobs (attachment trainee) in law firms around KL and Selangor. I was hoping to get an attachment at a firm in Maxis Tower KLCC. Sadly, after the initial interest, they rejected my offer; presumably my reference letter wasn’t good enough. On the other hand, I also got an offer from a law firm based along Jalan Sultan Ismail. Unfortunately, that offer is only for an attachment position of 2 weeks (I’m looking for a position at a firm for the duration of 2 months from July to September). Thus, I’m still looking for options. If any of you out there can suggest anything more fun and constructive for me to spend my holidays, drop me a suggestion!
